New Caney ISD officials announced Sept. 23 that the district would remain closed Sept. 24, but it will reopen Sept. 25. Scott Powers, executive director of public relations at NCISD, said via email that schools will be closed Tuesday to allow staff to return and prepare for the opening of school Wednesday. When Tropical Depression Imelda hit the New Caney area Sept. 19, the district closed all schools Sept. 19-20. During that time, New Caney High School as well as the district’s central administration office on the same property experienced water damage from the rain, Powers said. Contractors were hired to restore New Caney High School over the weekend, and Powers said students will be able to return to campus Wednesday. School buses will also return to their regular schedules Wednesday. "The district is working with a professional restoration company to finalize the preparations for reopening New Caney High School Wednesday and to restore impacted areas of the district central office," Powers said. "Employees who work in the district central office will temporarily relocate to other facilities." Follow all of our Houston-area flooding coverage.
