Ask the editor: How has renter occupancy changed in the Lake Houston area?


The housing demographics in the Lake Houston area vary by ZIP codes, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2017 American Community Survey.

Data shows that the majority of housing units in the Lake Houston area—when looking at the 77044, 77345, 77346, 77365, 77338, 77339 and 77396 ZIP codes—are owner-occupied rather than renter-occupied homes. In fact, the highest percentage of renter-occupied homes in 2017 was in the 77338 ZIP code, which is located north and south of FM 1960 at Hwy. 59, with 44.8%.

Renter occupancy increased from 2016-17 in 77338 as well as the 77044 and 77365 ZIP codes. The 77044 ZIP code is in the Beltway 8 area, and 77365 is in the Porter area near FM 1314.

Furthermore, the median gross rent in the seven ZIP codes is lowest in 77338 with a monthly payment of $948. The median gross rent is highest in 77345 at $1,307 monthly.
