The YMCA of Greater Houston hosted a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony March 3 to celebrate the completion of a second center west of Pin Oak Road and I-10 on Main Street in Katy.

The two days following the ceremony consisted of a host of family-friendly festivities, as well as live class demonstrations. Classes offered at the 6.58-acre property range from Zumba, swimming lessons, martial arts, Pilates, aerial yoga and cheerleading.

The state-of-the-art center is located on Katy Main Street and is one of the most unique centers in the Greater Houston area, according to YMCA representatives.

The center features health and wellness activities, such as aquatics and youth sports like baseball, basketball, flag football, soccer, softball, swimming and volleyball. Adult sports include basketball, volleyball, pickleball, racquetball, karate, swimming, dance, tae kwon do and self defense.

Additionally, several community programs including summer day camp, after-school care and senior activities are offered.

The 41,000 square-foot facility includes group exercise rooms, a heated outdoor pool, a basketball gym, strength training and cardio equipment, a cycle studio and a coffee bar.

The center is expected to receive more than 400,000 visits a year and will provide approximately $250,000 in program scholarships and community assistance.

It will also create more than 200 area jobs, according to YMCA officials.

The facility is open Monday through Friday from 5 a.m.-10 p.m., Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.
