Special Pals, an animal rescue resource center located at 3830 Greenhouse Road, Houston—near the border of Katy and Cypress—will celebrate its 43rd anniversary in August. The nonprofit animal shelter offers multiple services, such as adoptions, a low-cost clinic, fosters and rescue boarding.

For Lost Pet Prevention Month in July, Special Pals will give away 100 free microchips. The shelter is also one of over 250 others that will participate in the Bissell Pet Foundation’s “Empty the Shelters” event through the end of the month leading up to its anniversary. For the event, Special Pals will reduce adoption fees for animals older than four months to $25 to fight shelter overcrowding.

The resource center accepts donations and volunteers who can care for the animals, help with administrative tasks, work at events, transport animals to and from veterinary appointments, and more. 281-579-7387. www.specialpals.org
