Two Katy ISD elementary schools will receive new portable buildings for the 2020-21 school year.

The board of trustees approved in a 5-0 vote, with board Vice President Bill Lacy absent, the purchase of 13 new portables for two campuses at the March 30 regular meeting.

The cost of these portables from Palomar Modular Buildings is $880,171, which does not include the poured concreted footers or handicap ramps, among other details, per meeting documents. The funding source is the general operating fund.

Three portables will go to Pattison Elementary School, at 19910 Stonelodge St., Katy, and 10 portables will go to Campbell Elementary School, 3701 Cross Creek Bend Lane, Fulshear, per meeting documents.

“The purchase of the portable buildings is needed to support the new and relocated programs at campuses and for increased student growth,” said Mark Tiedt, KISD’s executive director of maintenance and operations.

Setup and delivery of these portables is estimated to be completed April 18, per meeting documents. Administration will present a recommendation to connect the portables at the April board meeting for approval, per meeting documents.

Originally, the district planned to have two portables to go to Wolfe Elementary School, but these have been redirected to Campbell Elementary, Tiedt said.

“When we took the initial proposal, the thought was to move a bilingual program over to Wolfe, but due to the extended closure [of the district due to the coronavirus pandemic], administration is considering changing that, so those two buildings will not be needed at Wolfe at that point,” he said.

Additionally, the board approved new gym bleachers for Mayde Creek High School. The total project cost is $335,000, and the replacement should be completed by Aug. 1, per meeting documents.
