All schools and facilities in the Katy ISD have been closed since Monday and will remain closed the rest of this week because of mobility issues for students and staff related to flooding in the Greater Houston area.
“This decision was made with the safety of our students and our staff in mind,” KISD Communications Director Denisse Cantu Coffman said Wednesday afternoon.
She said parents and staff in some areas throughout the district are unable to get to schools because some parts of west Houston and Katy are still flooded.
Some of the flooded areas identified by the KISD Emergency Management Team include Barker Cypress and Saums roads, Greenhouse Road at South Mayde Creek Bridge, Clay Road at South Mayde Creek Bridge and Kingsland Boulevard at Buffalo Bayou Bridge.
Cantu Coffman said the district is regularly assessing the condition of its schools.
“At this point we haven’t gotten any reports of any of our campuses being damaged,” she said.
Members of the KISD Police Department have been helping other agencies rescue people. On Monday, district police department personnel helped rescue 31 people and their pets, she said.
Cantu Coffman said district officials are hoping to have students go back to school on Monday, but no decision has been made.
Texas Commissioner of Education Mike Morath on Wednesday granted school districts in Houston-area flood disaster areas with two instructional waiver days that would not have to be compensated. The waivers would apply to KISD.
Cantu Coffman said in an email that the district has not made any recommendations yet regarding make-up days.
“The District will decide the next steps once this weather event has ended and we know exactly how many days we need to make-up,” she said.
