When a patron walks into Serene Beans, they are often seeking more than coffee, owner Karen Howard said.

“It’s the serene atmosphere they are after, the environment that is open to spirituality of all kinds,” she said. “We provide that here.”

Howard, who opened the coffee shop in 2016, said the path that led to Serene Beans began when she was looking for a serenity shop, or a store that offers recovery-related items, after moving to Katy from California. She could not find one, she said, so the seed to open her own was planted.

After working for a large financial institution for two decades, Howard decided to pursue her dream and open Serene Beans to bring a space for tranquility to Katy. The shop has moved twice but will stay put at its current location in Old Katy, Howard said.

Serene Beans opened with recovery in mind, Howard said. From the start, she said she wanted to make the shop not just a place for coffee, but also a place for healing and wellness.

Visitors to the coffee shop can also find local food and jewelry as well as incense, sage and other natural goods.

“It’s hard to put this place into words—it’s just a whole bunch of serendipity,” Howard said.

The menu at Serene Beans, which includes lattes, frappes, teas, smoothies, and other hot and iced beverages, was recently expanded to include matcha lattes and Italian cream sodas.

The new drinks were a result of residents’ feedback; Howard said she values customer input before introducing new items because she wants Serene Beans to be community focused.

Serene Beans has become a popular landing spot for residents seeking a calm, welcoming environment to enjoy a cup of coffee, Howard said.

“I can’t explain it because it’s not in my hands,” she said. “We provided the space and simply said yes to everything that came our way, and it turned into this.”
