Fort Bend County announced it has plans to open two additional coronavirus testing sites. This would bring the county's total number of free drive-thru testing sites to four.

This was revealed by Jacquelyn Minter, Fort Bend County Health and Human Services Department director and local health authority, at the regular April 28 Commissioners Court meeting.

The county plans to open one testing site at Thurgood Marshall High School, 1220 Buffalo Run, Missouri City, in Precinct 2, she said. Another site will open in Precinct 3, which encompasses the Katy area, Fulshear and Simonton, but an exact location was not provided.

"Our goal is to have a site for each one of the areas of the county as soon as possible," she said. “The judge has talked about his desire to make sure that we have enough testing so that we understand the numbers of who is affected in our community."

Minter did not provide opening dates for the upcoming sites, but she said the county intends to have its testing sites open through the end of May.

Two county-run sites are located in Rosenberg and Sugar Land, and they offer free testing to individuals with and without symptoms so long as they go online or call to schedule an appointment.

The county has partnered with AccessHealth to help administer the tests and oversee the sites.

County Judge KP George said at an April 27 press conference the county does not plan to partner with entities performing private testing and will instead focus on opening more county-run sites.

“We need to focus on more [testing sites] available rather than looking at those who are [already] doing it because some people can't afford [private testing],” George said.
