The city of Katy is improving drainage systems in the area and may soon support another project.
“We are really moving along in the flood control measures,” Mayor Pro Tem Chris Harris said. "We are in the first stages of our pond program and getting these detention ponds working. There is a lot of work happening."
Katy City Council discussed the possibility of approving a 13-acre detention pond near Pitts Road and Morton Ranch Road at the Oct. 15 meeting, but Council Member Janet Corte tagged the agenda item to be revisited at the Oct. 28 meeting when the council has more information.
The proposed project, a 13-acre detention pond, would be adjacent to the 40-acre detention pond on Pitts Road and Morton Ranch Road.
If approved, the city of Katy will award the $1,107,469.00 contract to Cooley Construction, LLC to complete the project.
Here is a list of drainage projects in the city of Katy:
- 1st Street drainage project
- 10-acre Cane Island detention pond paid for by Cane Island's municipal utility district
- Two Cane Island detention ponds, one measuring 9.5-acres and the other 18-acres, are currently under construction and are also paid for by Cane Island's MUD.
- The Town Park 35-acre detention pond, which was approved after the Tax Day Floods, was just completed in 2018.
- Cleaning and re-establishing drainage ditches in several neighborhoods including Riceland Terrace and Heritage Park West
- Completed Phase I 40-acre detention pond on Pitts and Morton Ranch roads
- Proposed Phase II 13-acre detention pond on Pitts and Morton Ranch roads to be paid for by a city of Katy bond passed in 2018

- Pine Forest ditch to create more capacity south of the Pine Forest neighborhood that experienced flooding (92% completed)
- Larger storm sewer systems along Avenue D (95% completed)
- Replacement of an existing storm sewer system, removal of fencing and installing a 42-inch pipe, which will drain water out of a neighborhood near East Elm Circle (50% completed)
