The city of Katy is requesting residents and commercial customers to volunteer to conserve water due to extreme temperatures and lack of rain. “I’m hoping to get some rain here in the next couple of days, but right now with the extreme temperatures … we just want people to be mindful of conserving natural resources, which is water,” Katy City Administrator Byron Hebert said. He added the city is working on repairing the north well, which has been out for a couple of weeks, and because the capacity is being pumped, the city is implementing Stage 2 water restrictions, which will require locals to do the following: • try to prevent water from running off into the street, drain or ditch; • reduce domestic water use, repair leaks; • reduce watering lawn and landscaping to no more than three times per week, nightly between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m.; • reduce water use for power washing of hard-surface areas such as sidewalks and parking lots; and • wait to establish new landscaping. To do its part in water conservation, the city of Katy will do the following: • discontinue flushing of water mains and hydrants; • discontinue irrigation of all public landscaped areas; • prohibit use of water to wash vehicles and trailers but commercial car washes will be allowed as needed; and • prohibit use of water non-essential activities to include dust control, fountains, washing of sidewalks, streets or public access area. "As soon as I get that well up north on, it’ll be fine,” Hebert said. “But people still need to in general conserve water.” For any concerns or questions, email [email protected]
