Early voting began April 25 in the city of Katy. Residents can cast their ballots for the three seats on Katy City Council at the City Administration Complex, located at 901 Avenue C. Registered voters can cast their ballots in person from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. April 25-29 and also from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. May 2-3. Three Katy City Council seats are up for election May 7—the Ward A seat held by incumbent Chuck Brawner, the Ward B seat held by incumbent Durran Dowdle and the at-large seat held by incumbent Steve Pierson. Brawner and Dowdle are running unopposed. Steve Jurovic is challenging Pierson for the at-large seat. Council member J. Gary Jones was originally listed on the ballot for a special election for the second seat in Ward A. Jones was appointed to the seat in June 2015 following the death of former Council member William Lawton. That special election was cancelled March 14 after Jones was appointed by a unanimous vote of City Council to serve the remainder of the term he was appointed to fill. Becky McGrew, assistant city secretary for Katy, said the city’s home rule charter allows for the process to reappoint Jones if he isn’t challenged. “The way the home rule charter reads, [a candidate] can be appointed until the next regular election. We can cancel the special election and declare him the winner,” McGrew said. “Then, the candidate would have to run for re-election [when the term expires].” Jones will be up for re-election in May 2017, McGrew said. April 25 is also the final day to register for a ballot by mail. Applications must be delivered in person to the city secretary’s office by 5 p.m. in order to receive a ballot by mail for the May 7 election.
