iRace Entertainment General Manager Ryan Owens has dedicated much of the past year ensuring the success of the local entertainment startup owned by Mike Baker, a Fulshear-born developer in the Katy area.

The privately owned business features an indoor racetrack, an arcade, bowling, virtual reality games and iBlast, which is a combination of paintball and laser tag.

“This was a one-of-a-kind opportunity for the owner,” Owens said. “He was looking for something for the area to have a place to come and have fun at a really reasonable price. It’s located right by Typhoon Texas and Katy Mills mall, where everyone is going to gravitate to. It’s something different besides just ice skating and trampolining.”

Owens, a Chicago native, arrived to the Katy area in 2007, and he said he quickly learned Katy is a great place to be.

“When you talk about Katy, you have to start with the high school football team,” Owens said. “Judging by my interactions with the students and the families in the area, it’s a really close community. It’s really awesome for the type of business we do here.”

Owens said the diversity throughout the Greater Houston area, including the Katy area, is another reason he enjoys working at iRace.

He added iRace will prioritize its involvement with local schools and their events in 2020.

“We want to be a part of the area, and for the area to know that we are here,” he said. “Not just as a place to come and have fun, but we want people to feel comfortable coming to us for donations and sponsorships. As a community, we have to support each other.”
