Scott Balin and his wife, Donna, own The Wellness Centre, a facility in Katy that offers chiropractic and nutritional services along with other treatments to help maintain the health of the whole body.

“We want to teach lifestyle changes, not just fix pain,” Donna said. “It’s really the big picture to take a step back and help people make better choices on diet, how to grocery shop, meal plan.”

Scott is the chiropractor at The Wellness Centre and works six days each week. Donna takes care of the administrative aspects of the business and manages the hired specialists, such as a certified nutritionist, massage therapists and skin therapists.

The center has a philosophy to treat the body as a whole, inside and out. Exterior health focuses on treating all muscular and skeletal injuries and headaches, while interior health services aim to improve nutrition and address stress.

“We try to treat things naturally without using any sort of chemicals,” Scott said. “We do it how they did it thousands of years ago … without using opioids. … We use herbs and whole food supplement nutrition. The goal is to enable the body heal itself, without introducing anything that is synthetic.”

Scott said The Wellness Centre is the only place in the area to offer liquid herbs as an alternative to the pill form of supplements to help clients increase their energy or to relax.

The Balins began their journey in 2000 when they opened a chiropractic office off Pin Oak Road near Katy Mills mall, Donna said. She explained The Wellness Centre was a natural evolution of that business as they added other services, such as acupuncture, and began to discover more ways to improve the overall health of their clients.

They expanded and relocated to a facility at 1432 FM 1463 in 2006.

Although they do not anticipate expanding to a second location, Donna said she wants to implement more programs, including one specifically targeting teen acne and stress.

She explained her vision of what the program would look like: A teenager would visit the center multiple times over six months to one year—depending on the severity of the acne—to visit with a skin care specialist and a certified nutritionist because acne is often related to diet.

Teens are often under a lot of stress, she added, so they would also visit a biofeedback therapist for stress and mental health.

Donna would also provide an at-home skin care kit to maintain the progress made during the program.

Scott said everyone should visit a chiropractor regularly to balance the body.

“Your body is like a car,” he said. “If you have one tire out of alignment, it’s going to throw everything else off. We’re like Jiffy Lube. You have to come change your oil before your engine breaks down. We like to see people come in healthy and see them regularly to protect them from illness rather than fixing them.”
