What residents need to know
The center—initially set to be temporarily housed in the former Justice of the Peace building, located at 8102 FM 359, Fulshear—could move to the Irene Stern Community Center.
The senior center was proposed by Fulshear citizens last fall to provide a space for seniors to gather. Since then, residents formed the nonprofit Fulshear Senior Civic Association to run programming for the future center.
Now, Fulshear Senior Civic Association looks to partner with countywide nonprofit Fort Bend Seniors, who could provide the center with operational and financial support, Assistant City Manager Kelsee Jordan Lee said. Fort Bend Seniors hosts senior recreational activities and coordinates with nationwide initiative Meals on Wheels.
The Irene Stern Community Center provided senior services before the COVID-19 pandemic, Lee said.

The proposed agreement between the nonprofits and the city, which was discussed at an April 1 special City Council meeting, would allow Fulshear Senior Center organizers free use of the community center weekly from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday, although City Council will have final approval of days and times allowed, Jordan said. The city would still reserve the right to the venue for activities or other paid usages.
According to agenda documents, with the support of Fort Bend Seniors, city officials said the senior center could have the following future services:
- Nutrition education
- Games and social activities
- Fitness classes
- Health screenings
- Arts and crafts
- Field trips
Going forward
Mayor Don McCoy and senior center officials were tasked by City Council to meet with Fort Bend Seniors leaders to solidify a formal agreement covering center staffing, cleaning and storage.
The agreement is expected to come back to City Council for approval at the next meeting April 15. If the agreement is approved, Fulshear Senior Civic Association officials said there are a few administrative duties that Fort Bend Seniors will need to complete before programming begins, which could take through the end of May.
