At a March 20 news conference, Precinct 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones announced the Sidewalks 4 Precinct 4 initiative, which will invest $20 million in sidewalk improvements throughout unincorporated Harris County.
What happened
Briones said sidewalks connect communities, provide safety, and connect residents to economic and educational opportunities.
“I see sidewalks as a place of connectivity. They connect us to each other; they connect us to places,” Briones said.
Some of the first sidewalk projects are in the Alief area in partnership with Alief ISD; however, at least one is in the Mayde Creek area of Katy.
The details
The new sidewalk is being built along the south side of Saums Road from the West Park Preserve to west of the Cullen Park North Trail and South Park View Drive intersection, Precinct 4 Media Specialist Brittany Little said in an email. The trail will connect the preserve to the Greenhouse Community Church and Cullen Park.
Construction began in March on the roughly $500,000 trail and will be completed in April or May. Other Phase 1 projects, which are short-term projects, will be completed throughout 2024-25 and will take four to eight weeks to complete, Little said.
Next steps
A future phase for the Mayde Creek project will add a sidewalk along Greenhouse Road north of Saums Road, but this section is in the planning phase, Little said.
She said planning for future longer-term projects are still ongoing, and the Precinct 4 website will soon be updated with an interactive map showing projects under construction and projects approved for construction.
