Katy City Council approved three interlocal agreements for the first citywide trail system at an April 28 meeting.

The agreements allow the city to develop $4 million worth of trails—from the future Leyendecker Landing Park to downtown—on the properties of Fawnlake homeowners association and two municipal utility districts, according to agenda documents.

A closer look

The trail will be constructed in five phases, with the first phase from Morton Road southward along the Cane Island Branch bayou to 10th Street, City Engineer David Kasper said in an email. The main pathway will vary in width from 6 to 12 feet, with several 5-foot-wide paths connecting neighborhoods to the main walking path.

Additional segments will be completed as part of street and roadway mobility projects, including:
  • 10th Street from Bartlett Road to Avenue C
  • Avenue C from 10th Street to Historic Town Square
  • Morton Road from Cane Island Branch to Pitts Road
  • Pitts Road from Morton to Leyendecker Landing Park
Going forward

Kasper said a topographic survey of the trail alignment is the next step before engineering design can begin. Both are expected to take a combined nine months to complete.

The city will then enter a two-month construction bid phase before constructing the first phase over approximately 10 months, he said.
