What’s happening?
At a March 24 meeting, Katy City Council approved a $72,000 contract with MHS Planning & Design LLC to create a conceptual master plan for Thomas Park and the surrounding area.
The 3.9-acre site includes the existing Thomas Park, the Rylander property and the city’s January acquisition of a property on Avenue D, according to agenda documents. Thomas Park is adjacent to downtown and is home to a walking path, benches, playground and gazebo, according to the city's website.
“We really want to showcase the intrinsic value of Thomas Park and adjacent properties and the history that it shows and what it means to the community,” said Hunter Rush, senior planner and partner for MHS Planning & Design. “We really want to tie Thomas Park into historic downtown so that we can make it a fluid area that all ties together.”
The details
The conceptual plan aims to determine how the space can best serve the city and its residents, Rush said. The plan will also prepare a preferred schematic design for the park.
Rush said public input will be collected in several ways, including:
- Town halls
- Stakeholder focus groups
- A community survey
The conceptual plan will be funded by the city’s capital improvement funds, according to agenda documents.
What happens next?
The conceptual plan is expected to be completed this fall, Rush said.
