Elected officials in Fort Bend County could see salary raises with the approval of the fiscal year 2024-25 budget.

In a nutshell

At an Aug. 27 meeting, Fort Bend County commissioners approved a proposal to raise the salaries of most of the county’s elected officials, including their positions.

The proposed salary changes range from about 4%-26% with the highest changes going to the county attorney, county sheriff and county judge. However, most county court and district court judges won’t see a pay increase, according to agenda documents.
Additionally, the county clerk, district clerk, county treasurer, district attorney and several district court judges also received raises ranging between 7%-9%, according to agenda documents.

Zooming out

Harris County approved a 9.2% pay increase for its elected officials as part of the proposed budget for FY 2024-25, ABC 13 reported. Most Harris County elected officials haven’t received a pay raise since 2016.

Additionally, all eight Harris County constables will receive a $45,000, or 17.5%, pay raise— bringing their base salary to more than $178,000 after the constables filed a grievance, ABC 13 reported.

What they’re saying

Although Fort Bend County commissioners ultimately passed the motion, Precinct 3 Commissioner Andy Meyers voted against the matter and said he would have preferred this item be taken to a workshop.

“I did not have an opportunity to provide input—some of these things I agree with and some of these things I don’t understand and probably don’t agree with,” he said.

Looking ahead

The county is set to hold two public hearings on its budget and proposed tax rate Sept. 23 and Sept. 24 at 5:30 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.

If the budget is approved at the Sept. 24 meeting, the elected officials raises will go into effect on Oct. 1.
