Candidate Tammy Reed will face incumbent Lance Redmon for Position 2 on the Katy ISD board of trustees in the May 3 election.

What you need to know

Candidates running for the board were asked to complete a questionnaire from Community Impact. They were asked to keep responses under 50 words, answer the questions provided and avoid attacking opponents. Answers may have been edited or cut to adhere to those guidelines, or for style and clarity.

Candidates shared the issue they believe is most pressing for the district, the offerings the district should prioritize in the face of expanded school choice, and how to accommodate the growing enrollment of special education and bilingual students.

The ballot order could not be accessed in time for publication, so the candidates were listed in alphabetical order.

Why did you choose to run for the Katy ISD board of trustees?

As a parent of three current Katy ISD students and as a business owner, I want to not only provide the best opportunities to my kids, but I want all our children to have the opportunities I had to learn, grow and succeed.

What do you think is the most pressing issue in KISD, and how would you address it?

The most pressing issue facing Katy ISD right now is school funding. We need our legislation to increase the basic allotment so Katy can continue to focus on kids! Educating our community about what and how to communicate with our representatives is an important task.

With the expansion of alternatives to public schools, what offerings should KISD prioritize for its students?

Katy ISD must continue to prioritize providing a state leading education to all the students of Katy ISD. We must get more creative in how we provide that education. A great example of how we are already doing this is the use of the flexible school day at Raines Academy.

What support should the district provide to accommodate the growth of special education and bilingual enrollment?

Staffing for both of these rapidly growing populations is a consistent challenge. Finding, hiring, and training our special education and bilingual educators must be a focus. We must continue innovating with ideas like our Behavioral Learning Center.
