Applications are being accepted now for Houston Community College’s Goldman Sachs-sponsored program this fall. The program is known as 10,000 Small Businesses and is geared toward helping local small business owners grow their business.

The deadline to apply is June 4, and due to the small class size, HCC will conduct interviews this summer, and 30-35 finalists will be accepted in early September, said Maya Durnovo, HCC’s associate vice chancellor for entrepreneurship.

The curriculum, designed by Babson College, focuses on practical business skills that can help small business owners grow their business, Durnovo said. Babson is the top-ranked entrepreneurial school in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report.

Goldman Sachs not only underwrites the program’s expenses, but it lends support through subject matter experts for each module of the program, which is focused on key areas of small business to help owners grow their business, Durnovo said.

“It's open to anyone across the Houston region, and we have folks driving in from ... Galveston, from Baytown, so the reach is quite extensive,” she said.

Who it’s for

Candidates are interviewed if chosen for consideration and must demonstrate that they are committed to investing their time. Requirements are as follows:
  • Attend the program orientation and complete all assignments.
  • Participate in out-of-class activities, such as networking events and business support clinics.
  • Create a business growth plan.
Classes are held at the HCC Alief-Hayes Campus Center of Entrepreneurship located at 2811 Hayes Road, Houston, according to the campus website.

The campus is part of the Northwest College of HCC, one of six in the system across the region.

The backstory

HCC has graduated 1,000 small business owners through the Goldman Sachs program since it was first offered by HCC in 2011, Durnovo said.

Numerous testimonials from past program participants collected by Durnovo and HCC cite the value of taking what they learned in the courses back to their small business.

“Although I started the program already having an MBA, my experience has been managing other people’s businesses and global organizations, not so much my own. Goldman Sachs helped me shift my focus to the entrepreneurship side of business and created a mindset for growth strategies, such as creating a business with recurring revenue and positioning for a profitable exit,” past program graduate Tam Nguyen said in her testimonial. Nguyen is CEO and human capital principal at NB Business Solutions.

The details

The free program is focused on business management areas, such as finance, marketing, sales and business law, Durnovo said.
  • The course is sponsored by Goldman Sachs and is free to attend.
  • The program length is 12 weeks.
  • Courses run from Sept. 18-Dec. 18.
“We're actually in the process of interviewing for that program, which comes at no cost to the small business owners, thanks to the generosity of Goldman Sachs. So that's a huge benefit,” Durnovo said.
