Texas Department of Transportation officials are seeking public input on proposed improvements to the Grand Parkway.

The $157 million project, which will be funded by toll road revenues, aims to improve the Grand Parkway from I-10 West to Hwy. 290, TxDOT Public Information Officer Leo Flores said. It includes adding one main lane in each direction, resulting in three northbound and three southbound lanes.

Why it matters

Flores said the improvements are intended to address growing congestion levels, as this section of the roadway has exceeded its capacity to support a steady flow of traffic, which obligates TxDOT to look at ways to mitigate heavy traffic as a part of a 2009 agreement with the seven counties that make up the Grand Parkway.

“The growing population over the past few years has had a significant impact on traffic on the Grand Parkway,” he said. “A lot of people talk about commuters and people going into town, but one of the things that the Grand Parkway serves is giving people an alternative route to get to where they’re going into town, which helps ease congestion.”

Get involved

The public is invited to submit comments through Aug. 22 with several submission opportunities, including:“Working a year in advance lets people know this is coming, stay on top of it, know where your detours are and plan your trips early,” Flores said. “It’s a growing pain that is part of the process—nobody likes congestion, nobody likes construction, but that’s part of the process, and when people are informed and when they engage with us, we can help alleviate those concerns.”

Looking ahead

An environmental decision and detailed design are expected to be completed between 2025 and early 2026, according to project documents.

Construction is anticipated to begin in mid-2026 and is estimated to be completed in less than five years.
