The city of Katy will add a temporary traffic signal on Morton Road to help alleviate traffic congestion amid area construction.

The big picture

At a June 9 meeting, Katy City Council amended a construction contract with Traffic Systems Construction Inc. to include a $77,500 temporary traffic signal to improve traffic flow. The project is funded by the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County.

The initial $310,310 contract included the construction of a traffic signal at the intersection of Morton and Katy Hockley roads, which is set to be completed at the end of July, City Engineer David Kasper said.

Zooming out

The city has several recently completed or ongoing transportation projects in the area, including:
  • Widening Katy Hockley Cut-Off Road from two to four lanes ($3.43 million)
  • Widening Katy Hockley Road from two to four-lanes ($9.7 million)
  • Realigning Pitts Road from Morton Road to Skiers Drive ($697,794)
Additionally, Kasper said the city plans to widen Morton Road between Katy Hockley and Pitts roads following the completion of adjacent road projects.

What’s next?

The temporary signal is set to be operational by July 15 and will stay in place until the permanent infrastructure is in place, likely in 2027, Kasper said.
