The big picture
At a May 6 meeting, Fulshear City Council approved an agreement with countywide nonprofit Fort Bend Seniors to allow the city’s Irene Stern Community Center to be used for a senior center. The community center is located at 6920 Fulshear Katy Road, Fulshear.
The Fulshear Senior Center was proposed by Fulshear citizens last fall to provide a space for seniors to gather after previous services ceased following the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I’m very excited that we are providing this facility to our senior residents of the city, and I hope that many of them can benefit from that and then this can become a success story for the city,” council member Abhi Utturkar said.
The specifics
The one-year agreement will allow Fort Bend Seniors free use of the facility Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., although city-sponsored and paying events will take precedence over senior center activities, according to agenda documents. The city is responsible for providing a seven-day notice ahead of needed closure.
The nonprofit is also responsible for all activities, including Meals on Wheels coordination, according to the agreement.
Officials previously said other activities offered at the senior center could include:
- Nutrition education
- Games and social activities
- Fitness classes
- Health screenings
- Arts and crafts
- Field trips
Get involved
Area seniors—ages 60 and older—who want to get involved in the center are encouraged to attend registration events on May 8-9 or June 12-13 from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Irene Stern Community Center, according to the agenda packet.
Looking ahead
The center will officially open its doors June 23 following the city installing new flooring at the community center, according to agenda documents.
