Maxed capacities at four northwestern secondary schools within Katy ISD has district officials considering attendance boundary modifications for the 2024-25 school year.

The big picture

These modifications will prepare for the opening of Junior High 18 and High School 10 in August 2024, which will be located in the northwest quadrant of KISD.

At a June 26 meeting, Chief Operations Officer Ted Vierling said adjusting the boundaries for junior high and high schools in this area will make the district’s immediate growth more sustainable and move students into classrooms and out of portable buildings.

The schools affected by these proposed boundary changes are:
  • Haskett Junior High School
  • Stockdick Junior High School
  • Katy High School
  • Paetow High School
Additionally, Taylor High School would absorb populations from Katy High School that are west of the Grand Parkway—with Katy High already 852 students over its 3,000 student capacity for the upcoming year, Vierling said.

A closer look

Capacities at northwestern secondary schools would be alleviated in the next two to five years by these boundary modifications, Vierling said. Katy ISD's Population and Survey Analysts representative, Kris Pool, presented data on predicted student growth at these schools during the meeting.
Quote of note

Vierling said attendance boundary modifications are no small feat, and acknowledged its impact on students and families within KISD. He said he hopes the changes will give the district time to balance student populations over the next five years.

“It's a very difficult thing to ask parents and kids to switch schools, we take that very seriously,” Vierling said. “We look at all sorts of different things—from historical [data] and the city of Katy. ... We try to do what we think is best for the district.”

What’s next

Those impacted by the boundary modification will be informed and given the opportunity to provide input through an online survey, email, written correspondence or telephone.

Families can see more information about which areas will be reorganized here, and identify their land use zone by using this Katy ISD map viewer.

Board members will reconvene on the modifications when Vierling brings final recommendations before the board in September. Approval of these changes will come in October.
