On June 26, Katy ISD board members will hear a progress update on the uses of the second and third rounds of Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief federal funds for the 2022-23 school year based on stakeholder feedback.

KISD was allocated $67.2 million of ESSER III funds—with $44 million issued summer 2021 and the remaining issued in spring 2022, per previous Community Impact reporting. Majority of those funds would be used to address learning loss, retain staff and purchase educational technology for students.

In March, 3,654 parents and guardians and 3,430 KISD staff responded to a survey that gauged the district’s use of funds and provision of specialized services.

These groups were asked which ESSER III related activities the district should focus on. A significant portion of the parents group highlighted three activities:
  • 45% chose implementing activities to support well-rounded education, safe and healthy students, and the effective use of technology.
  • 37% chose implementing activities to support career and technical education programs.
  • 33% chose addressing learning loss among students.
Both the parents and staff group chose addressing learning loss and the effective use of technology as two of their top three choices in which ESSER III activities the district should focus on.

However, 45% of the staff group said KISD should implement activities to address the unique needs of low-income students, students with disabilities, English learners, racial and ethnic minorities, students experiencing homelessness, and foster care youth.

KISD board meetings are open to the public and are held in the Katy ISD Education Support Complex, 6301 S. Stadium Lane, Katy, starting at 5 p.m. Live and archived meetings may also be viewed online.
