Officials with Rakkan Ramen, a Tokyo-based eatery serving authentic Japanese cuisine, announced the grand opening of its third Greater Houston location in Katy in a June 15 news release.

A soft opening for the new Katy location at 1321 N. Westgreen Blvd. will be held on June 16, followed by a grand opening on June 24.

The restaurant focuses on the umami flavor profile—which is one of the five basic tastes along with sweet, sour, bitter and salty. Rakkan Ramen's umami broth is flavored with these elements:
  • Kombu dashi, or kelp
  • Onion
  • Donko, or mushroom
  • Ginger
  • Carrot
  • Garlic

On the menu are noodle soups built with vegetable broth, grilled pork, seasoned egg and other aromatic ingredients, with vegan options and protein substitutions also available. Appetizers include vegan gyoza, crispy chicken, sushi and takoyaki—battered octopus with green onion, seaweed, teriyaki sauce, mayonnaise and sesame seeds.

Franchisee Chris Lav opened the first Rakkan Ramen in Houston in 2021 and plans to open two additional concepts before the end of the year, according to the release.

“We are excited to continue expanding the Rakkan Ramen brand in the Greater Houston area,” Lav said in a statement. “We look forward to being a part of the Katy community and continue to grow this year with more locations coming.”
