The Texas Department of Transportation Houston District will host public hearing sessions for updates on the White Oak Bayou Elevation Project along I-10 from Heights Boulevard to I-45.
Beginning at 5 p.m. April 9, those interested in hearing updates about the project can log on to view a pre-recorded video presentation. There will also be an in-person meeting April 14.
What to expect
The hearing will discuss the installation of a 10-foot-wide shared-use path for bicycles and pedestrians on the north side of I-10 along White Oak Bayou between Studemont Street and I-45. It will also include a connection to the south side of I-10 at Sabine and Maude streets.
“The shared-use path enhances the pre-existing trail network along I-10 and White Oak Bayou by providing an additional two miles of an alternate transportation option along the corridor,” TxDOT officials said in a meeting announcement. “This enhanced pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure connects with the Houston Avenue Bridge and provides direct access to businesses, residences and community spaces.”
Some background
The $347 million TxDOT project is intended to make improvements along the nearly 2-mile stretch of I-10 from Heights Boulevard to I-45, elevating the highway to mitigate future flooding in the area.
The project scope includes elevating the five 12-foot-wide lanes in each direction, and creating a 10-foot-wide inside lane, outside shoulders and a 14-foot-wide high-occupancy vehicle lane in each direction. Additionally, the project will include constructing a 26-acre detention pond beneath the elevated I-10 main lanes and a 10-foot-wide shared-use path connecting to the existing trail system, according to project details.
What's next?
According to previous Community Impact coverage, the project started in January 2025 and is anticipated for completion in mid-to-late 2028.
