Houston City Council approved a contract with NBG Constructors Inc. to begin repairs on the Brazos Street bridge Oct. 8. The bridge, which connects Hwy. 59 to the Midtown and Montrose area via Spur 527, was closed in July over concerns of falling debris. The 50-year-old bridge had deteriorated in several locations, according to city reports, and its entire deck slab needs to be replaced. The underlying structure, support columns and steel beams will also need to be strengthened, the city said. More than 60,000 vehicles per day use Spur 527, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.
