Honest Eats is set to open a brick-and-mortar store on Aug. 1 at the M-K-T Heights Development at 600 N. Shepherd Drive, Ste. 122, Houston.

Honest Eats was first founded in 2013 by Barbara Zuluaga. According to a press release, Zuluaga was inspired to launch the venue by her niece’s brain cancer diagnosis. It was during this time that she said began to look into how nutrition can be linked to chronic illness and cancer, and she devoted herself to researching food quality.

In an email, Zuluaga said she began Honest Eats in a shared commercial kitchen, which is when she realized how often some restaurants cut corners that could be harmful to a customer’s health.

“While some of our competitors were taking shortcuts to produce food faster, we were slowing down our production to make traditional foods from scratch,” Zuluaga said. “We were at a whole different level, and our customers love us for it.”

The storefront will offer a meal plan pickup service, a grab-and-go option, a hot bone broth bar, a gluten-free and ketogenic dessert case, premade bone broth soups, elderberry syrups, oils and other holistic remedies. The storefront will also have a “shared learning space” for cooking and nutrition classes, according to the release.

The meals offered are made of “organically grown produce and grass-fed or organic proteins whenever possible,” according to the release. They are free of artificial preservatives, peanuts, corn, soy, artificial colors, chemical additives and gluten.

Ketogenic, paleo and plant-based menu items are available.

“The entire point of our meal program is to empower people to take back their health by knowing exactly what's in their food,” Zuluaga said. “There's no weird ingredients; the recipes are familiar flavors to curb cravings, responsibly sourced and prepared from scratch, like your grandmother would have made."
