Population continues to grow in both the city of Houston and Harris County, according to new data released Dec. 7 by the U.S. Census Bureau. However, growth has slowed down compared to the previous year.
Harris County is growing at a faster rate than Houston, seeing 4.4% population growth between 2017 and 2022, compared to roughly 1.3% growth in Houston. When
data was released for 2021, the five-year growth rates for Harris County and Houston were 5.9% and 2.4%, respectively.
The median age in both Houston and Harris County rose over the past five years, with the median age for residents increasing by roughly one year. Harris County and Houston have similar populations when breaking age data down by range, with Harris County having slightly more residents in the 0-19 age range.
Harris County and Houston are also similar in racial demographics, with Harris County having a slightly higher percentage of white and Asian residents, while Houston has a higher percentage of Hispanic and Black residents. Since 2017, both Houston and Harris County saw increases in the number of Asian and Hispanic residents.
Both Houston and Harris County saw education attainment levels increase between 2017 and 2022. The percentage of Houston residents with a bachelor's degree or higher rose to more than 35% in 2022, up from 31% in 2017 and continuing an ongoing trend of the city becoming more educated.
