Kamin represents District C, a geographic area that includes portions of the Heights, Washington Avenue, Montrose, Rice Village and Meyerland. Her decision has sparked a special election in April to fill her seat on the council.
Why it matters
Candidate applications officially opened Dec. 1, with the last day to file and write-in deadline set for Feb. 2 by 5 p.m. Interested applicants will need to file with the Mayor's Office, 901 Bagby St., or email [email protected].
A drawing for the ballot order will be held Feb. 3 at 10 a.m. in the City Hall Annex council chamber.

The candidates
As of Dec. 18, two candidates have already announced their campaign for the position.
Joseph Panzarella, a community organizer and president of the Fourth Ward Super Neighborhood, announced his run for candidacy Dec. 15.
“I love District C, and I know I can make it more affordable, safer and connected for every resident,” Panzarella said in a news release. “I’m running to create safe, inclusive streets, expand affordable housing for the people who built our communities and for those moving here now, and do the everyday work that makes District C easier to call home.”
Nick Hellyar, owner of the real estate firm Hellyar Group, also threw his hat into the ring early, announcing his run on Instagram a week ago.
"From neighborhood advocacy to real problem solving at City Hall, my work has always centered on making Houston better for the people who call it home," he wrote. "I will stand up for District C with passion and purpose as I always have, and I'm ready to get to work."
