Houston ISD board managers reviewed the results of a new family survey officials said shows growing family confidence in their children’s education and the overall direction of the district.

The details

Matt Sawyer, HISD's deputy chief of data and impact, presented the results of the survey to board managers during the Jan. 15 meeting. Sawyer noted the results of the survey indicated improved feelings toward the district compared to the results of a similar survey conducted in May.

“More than 91% of our families had more positive things to say about their school and the district than not,” Sawyer said.

HISD Superintendent Mike Miles touted the results of the survey in a Jan. 15 news release.

“These results reflect the hard work of our educators, staff and school leaders who are committed to student success every single day,” Miles said in the news release. “Families are seeing real improvement in their schools and across HISD. We're grateful for their confidence and will continue working to earn their trust.”

A closer look

Sawyer said the survey was sent out to around 104,700 families and included responses from more than 11,000 families from across the district, representing a roughly 25.7% response rate.

Sawyer noted the survey included more than double the number of respondents who participated in a similar survey administered in the spring, noting the demographic breakdown of respondents closely resembled that of the district.

“Our responses more closely mirrored the population of the district than in our May survey,” Sawyer said. “This was a key improvement.”

Sawyer pointed to several key findings from the survey results, noting:
  • Roughly 84% of families would recommend their child's school to other families
  • Around 79% of families believe their child's school is improving
  • Roughly 67% of families believe HISD is improving and headed in the right direction based on their child’s experience
Based on a cumulative review of all responses, Sawyer said more than 90% of participating families expressed an overall favorable sentiment toward HISD.
What’s next

HISD officials said in the news release that they will use the survey findings to maintain quality instruction and identify opportunities for continued acceleration and advancement.
