Joy Jones, a local entrepreneur and certified drone pilot, has announced plans to open a new location of the coding and robotics chain Code Wiz on Jan. 14 in the Oak Forest area, 2015 W. 34th St., Houston.
The Code Wiz chain uses a "Montessori-style approach" to its classes, which are centered around projects and allowing students to explore at their own pace, according to a Dec. 15 press release about the school's opening.
Courses involve teaching students how to build multilevel video games; create animation; build websites in HTML, CSS and Javascript; and provide introductions to the programming language Python. Students can also team up to participate in the national First Lego League Challenge, a robotics competition for elementary and middle school students.
The center also offers birthday parties and opportunities for Girl Scout troops to earn badges.
Jones received a Part 107 certification for drone piloting from the Federal Aviation Administration, according to the release. She said she wanted to open the school after noticing a need for more access to classes and camps for children in Houston related to science, technology, engineering and math fields.
“We have a chance to teach young learners in Oak Forest and the surrounding central Houston area the language of the future—coding—in a language they already understand in games and robotics,” Jones said in a statement.
Classes will begin Jan. 9, and a grand opening celebration will take place from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Jan. 14 with interactive coding and robotics programming for children, games, raffles, a photobooth and giveaways.
The first 50 families who sign up will receive 31.4% off a lifetime membership.
Locations of the chain can be found in soon-to-be eight states, including other Texas locations in Plano, Cypress and Katy.
