A day after announcing it would offer free meal distribution at five locations across the city, Houston ISD has expanded to 36 for the week of March 16-20, but no more than 11 sites per day will be running.
“After witnessing first-hand, the enormous need in the community at our first distribution site, it was clear that we needed to increase our efforts to help more families in partnership with the Houston Food Bank,” HISD Interim Superintendent Grenita Lathan said in a release. “Our top priority right now is doing our part to ensure that our children are being fed during these unprecedented times, and I am thankful to all who are stepping up to serve families.”
The sites are open to all families, the district said, and will be evaluated throughout the week and extended, if needed, according to the news release.

Houston ISD and the Houston Food Bank School Market program will offer daily food distribution March 16-20.
The distribution will take place at five high schools. A sixth high school will host a one-time distribution March 14.
"The measure is being implemented to ensure all HISD families, many of whom have students who depend upon school meals, have access to healthy food while the district is closed," a district news release said.
The district on March 12 announced it would close all campuses through March 31. About 75% of HISD's 200,000 students qualify for free and reduced school lunch and rely on the district for up to three meals a day in some cases.
