The latest update
The veteran establishment along Shepherd Drive originally closed at the start of 2025, with the owners sharing details that they planned to move the cafe down the street from its original location. Spokesperson Paula Murphy shared in January that the owners hoped to reopen in the fall of 2025. However, that date has been pushed back.
Some details
The new location will be located at 1201 S. Shepherd Drive, and is expected to be around 6,600 square feet and include a second floor. The original location, at 1103 S. Shepherd Drive, was estimated at 4,500 square feet and was occupied inside an old 1930s home.
"For the past several years, our little house has started to fail us with crumbling foundations and constant repairs," the owners stated in a late 2024 Facebook post. "The home was built in 1935 and converted into a restaurant when Backstreet opened in 1983. The building has done its best to withstand high traffic, heavy kitchen equipment and constant damage, but its time has come, and it’s given all it has to give. For Backstreet to continue for the next 41 years, it needs a strong and shiny new home."
While Backstreet Cafe remains closed for remodel, the owners continue to operate their sister restaurants, including Hugo's, Caracol, Xochi, URBE and Zaranda.
