After 15 years of operation, starting from its beginnings as a Houston food truck, the owners of Good Dog Houston, Amalia Peered and Daniel Caballero, announced on social media April 24 that they are closing their brick-and-mortar location in the Heights by the end of April.

“Though we’re closing this chapter, the memories and relationships built over these 15 years will stay with us forever. Thank you, Houston, for believing in us, supporting us and allowing us to live out this dream,” the post stated.

More details

Good Dog Houston served handcrafted hot dogs, salads, sides and shakes, offering guests the ability to dine on the dog-friendly patio with their selection of rotating local craft beers, according to the eatery’s website.

While not directly mentioning the reasoning behind the closure on social media, the owners described how their customers supported them throughout their tenure and during what they called the “highs and lows” of operating during the COVID-19 pandemic and the effect of weather-related events in Houston, including hurricanes and floods.

“You showed up during storms, both literal and figurative. We weathered hurricanes and floods together and when the world shut down during COVID, your support kept us afloat,” the statement read.

Quote of note

The Heights location was the first brick-and-mortar restaurant that opened in 2013. Good Dog Houston officials opened the Montrose location three years later in 2016, but closed in November 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. The couple decided not to renew the lease on the historic bungalow at 1312 W. Alabama St., Houston, that housed the restaurant, as previously reported in Community Impact.

On April 27, their final day of operating, the owners posted a message of gratitude to the community.

“It’s been such an amazing day full of love and support!" they said. "This is the last call for Good Dog Houston, we love you!”
