From the owners of Traveler's Table on lower Westheimer Road comes a new global street food concept in Montrose called Traveler's Cart.

The concept is set to open this October, offering curated cocktails and cuisine from around the world at a more casual setting and accessible price point than its upscale sister restaurant, according to an Oct. 21 news release.

How we got here

Co-owners and husband-and-wife team Matthew and Thy Mitchell have worked for 20 years to bring the restaurant to fruition, per the release.

Matthew Mitchell's global experience dates back to his time as a student at Oxford University and as a journalist eating street food at night markets and back-alley food carts, the release states.

Thy Mitchell, who founded travel apparel company Foreign Fare, grew up in the restaurant industry with her mother's and grandmother's Houston-based Vietnamese restaurant and has trekked through several countries, including Italy, Morocco and Japan, per the release.

“Both of our lives have been greatly enriched by our travels and those experiences have shown us how important food can be for learning about other cultures and for connecting with people all over the world," Matthew Mitchell said in a statement. "We have great respect for the people who we've met making this food—often in the humblest of circumstances. We truly want to celebrate them and their food traditions."

What to expect

The 4,000-square-foot, street market-inspired eatery will offer both counter- and full-service, as well as an expansive menu with influence from global chefs, per the release.

Executive Chef Miguel Torres was raised in Puerto Rico, while Indonesian chef Ardian Brantoro has worked in kitchens throughout Europe, Thy Mitchell said in the release. Meanwhile, Culinary Director Stanton Bundy gained experience in the New Orleans and South Florida food scenes and hails from Texas Hill Country, she said.

The menu includes street snacks, entree dishes and tapas-style plates, such as Thai fried chicken wings, pan-fried lamb dumplings, a churrasco steak sandwich and Jamaican jerk pork ribs. Desserts include a Greek apricot soufra and a custard-filled filo pastry cake.

According to the release, each dish tells a story—the khao soi, a Thai egg noodle dish with yellow coconut curry and chicken, is a dish the Mitchells fell in love with on their honeymoon.
