Officials with DePelchin Children’s Center—a Houston-based nonprofit that aims to help vulnerable children and families—broke ground May 22 on a new volunteer services building at the group's Memorial Drive location.

The building was made possible in large part by a $2 million donation from the Junior League of Houston, which the building will be named after, officials said in a May 24 news release. It will open in 2025.

The two-story building will quadruple DePelchin’s capacity to provide donated goods to support families and children in need, according to the release. When completed, it will also allow the nonprofit to expand its family classroom and volunteer workroom space.

In addition to the Junior League donation, the $8 million center was funded by donations raised through DePelchin's "Big Hearts, Bright Futures" capital campaign, according to the release.

“We are excited to begin construction on this building so that we can have a greater capacity to serve children and families,” Jenifer Jarriel, DePelchin board president and CEO, said in a statement. “We are grateful for our longstanding partnership with the Junior League of Houston, which generously chose to support DePelchin with its Centennial Anniversary Gift. We also appreciate all of the supporters who have contributed to this new space.”
