A suspected arsonist set fire to Bohemian Photography at Winter Street Studios in Sawyer Yards in December, and artists are still in recovery.

The Houston Arts Alliance established an emergency fund to aid artists impacted and displaced by the studio fire. According to a Feb. 16 press release from the city of Houston, the alliance received 64 applications from Winter Street artists, reporting more than $2.5 million in damages.

At a Feb. 16 press conference at the Winter Street Studios—which included Mayor Sylvester Turner, Council Member Karla Cisneros, and several Winter Street Studios artists and fire victims—it was announced that the city of Houston will donate $250,000 to the Alliance's emergency fund.

“Born out of this tragedy is the knowledge that Houstonians are always there for each other,” Turner said. “We are here for the affected artists and think of them in these trying times. With our help, we hope the artists are soon able to get back into their creative spaces and resume their contribution to the creative economy.”
