Katami—a sushi-focused concept—opened its doors in Montrose on Nov. 7.
  • The 180-seat restaurant comes from the four-time James Beard Award-nominated chef Manabu Horiuchi, known as Chef Hori, and partner Yun Cheng.
Together, the two previously opened another Japanese restaurant known to Houston diners as Kata Robata.

"It's been an incredible journey creating a menu that showcases traditional techniques and preparations but also allows me to use my creativity to illustrate what I see as the future of Japanese cuisine," Horiuchi said in a news release.

On the menu

The sushi restaurant focuses on a Japanese speciality beef called wagyu and sake, or Japanese rice wine, to complement dishes. The restaurant relies on fish flown in almost daily from Japan, according to the news release.
  • Signature rolls include the Southern Smoke roll that incorporates tuna belly, caviar, shiso, wasabi, sea urchin and soy sauce.
There's also the 12- or 15-piece sashimi-focused Omakase experience available that curates the best fish and cuts by the chef's choice. Salad options include the Texas wagyu beef salad. Diners can also choose from traditional Japanese street food, including the corn mushroom okonomiyaki.

"Japan is forever in my heart and on my mind, and Katami is my opportunity to expand on what we've done at Kata Robata and to share my passions as a show of gratitude to my adopted city of Houston," Horiuchi said.
