Sugar Land's Pythagoras restaurant plants seeds for going vegan

The story behind Pythagoras began with a truth that is largely unknown, said Roozi Avokhani, co-founder of the vegan restaurant in Sugar Land.

“Basically all the Greek philosophers—Pythagoras, Plato, Socrates—these guys were all raw vegans, meaning they only ate fruits, vegetables and nuts,” Avokhani said. “Nikola Tesla, Albert Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci, ... at the time there was no term for veganism, but these people did not consume anything that came from animals.”

This knowledge was revealed to him 10 years ago, Avokhani said, after a conversation with a guest at the JW Marriott hotel in Houston’s Galleria introduced him to the concept of veganism.


The guest said if he truly loved animals, he wouldn’t eat them. This idea dismantled his worldview, he said.

Houston receives $1.2B for clean energy initiatives across the region

Houston will receive up to $1.2 billion as part of the Gulf Coast Hydrogen Hub for the purpose of supporting hydrogen initiatives in the region, according to an Oct. 13 news release from the White House.


The hydrogen hub project will be run by HyVelocity, a group of organizations working together to promote clean hydrogen in Texas, southwest Louisiana and the U.S. Gulf Coast areas. HyVelocity is expected to create 45,000 jobs in the region, according to the release.

Greater Houston area to receive 5th area code

The Greater Houston area is getting the 621 area code after it exhausts the last available numbers for the four it currently has.


The Public Utility Commission of Texas, or PUCT, approved Houston’s fifth area code, according to an Oct. 25 news release from the agency. Officials expect to start handing out the new 621 code in 2025, which is when the current four area codes—281, 346, 713 and 832—are expected to run out.

The fifth area code will meet the numbering needs of the area for another nine years, according to the release.

Harris County group hosts candlelight vigil to honor victims, survivors of domestic violence


As nonprofit leaders and Houston officials work on new strategies to eliminate domestic violence in the Greater Houston area, a multifaith group gathered at Hotel Ylem on Oct. 24 for a candlelight vigil honoring victims and survivors from 2023.

The vigil—a collaborative effort between the Harris County Domestic Violence Coordinating Council's interfaith committee, Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse and Daya Houston—included representatives from the Muslim, Jewish, Christian, Hindu and Sikh communities, among others.

That VR Place bringing rare virtual reality games to Seabrook


That VR Place allows customers to play motion-tracking virtual reality games in groups. Games include escape rooms, zombie survival games, cooking games and more. The VR technology tracks players in real time so they can freely roam and look around virtual spaces.
