Houston will receive up to $1.2 billion as part of the Gulf Coast Hydrogen Hub for the purpose of supporting hydrogen initiatives in the region, according to an Oct. 13 news release from the White House.

The details

The hydrogen hub project will be run by HyVelocity, a group of organizations working together to promote clean hydrogen in Texas, southwest Louisiana and the U.S. Gulf Coast areas. HyVelocity is expected to create 45,000 jobs in the region, according to the release.

The Biden-Harris administration announced a $7 billion investment in hydrogen production through seven regional hubs as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, according to the release.

“It is a natural fit, as Houston is the energy capital of the world,” U.S. Rep. Lizzie Fletcher, D-Houston, said in an Oct. 13 news release.

Fletcher promoted Houston to be a hub during an Energy & Commerce committee hearing in March.
