Construction is underway on a new location of the Barcelona-based candy store Papabubble at 927 Studewood St., Ste. 120, Houston, with expectations to open to the public around late December or early January.

Once open, it will be the only North American location of Papabubble. Stores previously operated in New York City and Toronto but have since closed.

The shop is known for its store design, which allows customers to view the candy-making process, including the addition of color and the shaping, pulling and cutting of the candy, shop owner and manager Jesse Cushman said.

"It's everything except the candy actually cooking, the boiling of the sugar," Cushman said. "You get to see the fun parts."

All candy sold at the shop is made in-house. Products include standard candy mixes, such as "fruit salad," a collection of different fruit-flavored candies that are also designed to look like the fruits they taste like. Seasonal mixes are available at certain times of year, including Christmas, Halloween and Valentine's Day, among others.

The shop will also offer customization, which can include candies with names or specific designs to celebrate occasions, such as baby showers or birthdays, Cushman said. Other products will include lollipops, marshmallows made in-house, butterscotch candies, caramels, sour candies and gummy candies called Bubblets.

The online store is open and running out of a ghost kitchen in the Galleria area until the main shop opens up, Cushman said.
