What we know
The new library will be located at 1001 California St. According to a Nov. 11 news release, it will feature enhanced technology, new reading spaces, an outdoor terrace and new artwork with:
- Enhanced access to computers and high-speed internet
- A floor designed for children and teens with interactive programs
- A floor with reading areas and a flexible meeting room for educational programs and community activities
- An outdoor space and terrace with an inviting area for open-air events, reading clubs and cultural programs
- Permanent artwork by Houston-based, Filipino American artist Kill Joy, entitled "Spirit of Montrose" inspired by the neighborhood’s history
"The neighborhood could not be more thrilled to have such a beautiful and welcoming space for all ages where innovation meets Montrose’s love for books," she said. "This opening comes on the heels of years of extensive community engagement and involvement by residents."
Taking a step back
The new location replaces the former Freed-Montrose Library, 4100 Montrose Blvd., which closed briefly in March due to ongoing safety and facility issues.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire reopened the library a month later after meeting with library administration to find a way to keep the building safe until the new location was ready for visitors.
As of Nov. 14, the library is now permanently closed.
Something to note
According to the news release, the Montrose Boulevard location would have required over $14 million in renovations to meet safety standards and address patron technology. However, city officials and library leaders said they have been working together to explore renovation options that will preserve the building's historic charm.
