The Anya Tish Gallery is hosting a fundraiser with 100% of proceeds going to the Care Ukraine Crisis Fund, providing immediate aid to Ukrainians in need.
The fundraiser will take place April 29-30 at the Anya Tish Gallery in Montrose, 4411 Montrose Blvd., Ste. A, Houston.
Anya Tish, a Polish artist and curator, has been running her gallery for 26 years. When Russia invaded Ukraine in February, Tish said her friends and family in Poland jumped in to help Ukrainians by volunteering, donating and opening their homes to house refugees. Being in Texas, Tish said she decided to put together a fundraiser to help from afar.
“Everybody that I know of is helping, volunteering, and here I am in Texas. So this was the one way that I could make a little bit of a difference and contribute to the relief,” Tish said.
The two-day event will start with a priority night on April 29 from 6-9 p.m. Ukrainian honey and pepper vodka shots will be served in addition to small bites throughout the gallery. Those in attendance will have first choice of the art being sold, with pieces ranging from $50-$1,000.
On April 30, the gallery will be open from noon-5 p.m. Patrons are welcome to bring family and friends, regardless of their intention to purchase art, Tish said. Refreshments will also be served to those in attendance.
The idea for the fundraiser formed in March. Tish and her director, Dawn Ohmer, said they have not put together a similar event in the past.
“We’ve had so much of the local community come together so quickly to embrace what we are doing,” Ohmer said. “Houston is known as a city for their pride and coming together during hard times. We’re hoping that these two days will not only show a lot of unification but promote events similar to this.”
The fundraiser will feature artists from all over the world. Some of the Houston-based artists will be Saida Fagala, an Azerbaijan-born ceramic artist; Will Cannings, a British-born sculptor, whose art is featured everywhere from smaller galleries to the Hobby Airport; and Houston local Neva Mikulicz, who will be contributing her drawings.
