After Hurricane Ida struck Southeast Louisiana Aug. 29 as a Category 4 storm, several Houston-area businesses and nonprofits stepped up to collect donations for relief efforts. Those looking to lend a hand can volunteer or make a donation to the following Houston-area-based organizations and businesses.

National Association of Christian Churches

The city of Houston teamed up with the National Association of Christian Churches, or NACC, to provide shelter for over 120 evacuees. To volunteer or donate supplies call 832-626-7111.

Gallery Furniture

Gallery Furniture owner Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale responded to Hurricane Ida by accepting evacuees at his store locations. Known for his contributions during times of need, McIngvale teamed up with several area organizations to send a crew of volunteers and supplies to Southeast Louisiana. Donations to the effort can be made at www.galleryfurniture.com.

Kroger

Houston-area locations of national grocery chain Kroger are providing food donations for families in need in the New Orleans area. At the checkout counters, shoppers can donate $6 to provide nonperishable and ready-to-eat meals and snacks. Find a Kroger location at www.kroger.com.

Houston Food Bank

The Houston Food Bank is leading a relief effort in Southeast Louisiana, bringing food, water and supplies to those in need. Rather than accepting food or water donations, the food bank suggests donating money to the cause or hosting a fundraiser via social media. Find out more at www.houstonfoodbank.org or by calling 713-223-3700.
