About 150 people attended the event, which started after Memorial Hermann experienced seven drowning and near-drowning victims—all under the age of 17—at the hospital in 2012, Trauma Program Coordinator Kay Sword, said. Holly Wyckoff, a registered nurse at Memorial Hermann and its education resource specialist of women’s services, demonstrated CPR at the event. Wyckoff said she had to use it herself when her now 10-year-old son nearly drowned in a friend’s swimming pool when he was toddler. She said parents need to understand that drowning is often a silent event. “I did not hear a noise,” she said. “I did not hear a splash.”
