Several area nonprofit organizations are offering free Thanksgiving meals to families in need next week. Northwest Assistance Ministries, 15555 Kuykendahl Road, Houston, is continuing its 16-year tradition of providing area families with food for the holidays. About 800 families will receive turkey and trimmings valued at $50 on Nov. 19 and Nov. 21, which will feed a family of four for three to five days. Families must qualify based on income and live within NAM’s 17 ZIP code service area. Reservations for the Thanksgiving event are full, but "if available" vouchers for meals may be available for the group's December event, which provides food for families during the holiday season. Clients with the correct documentation can register for December meals on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 9 a.m., said NAM Media Specialist Tatiana Shams. In previous years, NAM has been able to fulfill "if available" vouchers, Shams said. NAM welcomes donations of food, money and fresh produce for the Thanksgiving giveaway. Frozen turkey or ham, canned fruit, stuffing, mashed potato mixes, cranberry sauce and other holiday meal items are needed. Food pantry donations can also be made to NAM's Joanne Watford Nutrition Center throughout the year. The pantry provided groceries to 18,765 people last year and supplies 125 low-income seniors with supplemental groceries on a monthly basis.
