Klein ISD consistently scored higher than the state average on 2016 State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness exams, according to data released Monday. However, Spring ISD consistently scored lower than the state average.

Both KISD and SISD earned a districtwide Met Standard rating.

KISD
Statewide algebra I scores reflect an 81 percent satisfactory rating, while KISD scores were four points above, with an 85 percent satisfactory rating. Statewide biology and U.S. history scores reflect a 91 and 94 percent satisfactory rating, respectively, while KISD scored 93 in biology and 97 in U.S. history.

Statewide English I and II test scores reflect a 63 and 66 percent satisfactory rating. KISD scores were each 8 percent higher than the state average with a 71 and 74 percent satisfactory rating, respectively.

Among grades four through eight, all students took the reading and math STAAR tests. Districtwide, KISD eighth graders scored the highest in reading with an 88 percent satisfactory rating, compared to the state average of 82 percent. In Math, KISD eighth graders scored nine points above the state average, with an 82 percent satisfactory rating.

KISD fourth graders scored 72 percent on the STAAR writing exam, three points higher than the state average of 69 percent. Seventh graders scored 73 percent, three points higher than the state average of 70 percent.

In social studies, KISD eighth graders scored 72 percent satisfactory, compared to the state average of 65. In science, eighth graders scored 84 percent, while the state average is 76 percent. KISD fifth graders scored seven points higher in science than the state average of 82 percent.

SISD
While SISD earned a districtwide Met Standard rating, one school, Eickenroht Elementary School, was rated as needing improvement.

End-of-course exams for high school students included algebra I, biology, English I, English II and U.S. history.

SISD scores were 23 percent lower than statewide algebra I scores, rating 58 percent satisfactory. Statewide biology and U.S. history scores reflected a 91 and 94 percent satisfactory rating, respectively, while SISD scored 79 in biology and 90 in U.S. history.

SISD scores in English I and II were 12 and 20 percent lower than the state average with a 51 and 46 percent satisfactory rating, respectively.

Among students tested in SISD, sixth graders scored the lowest in reading with a 60 percent satisfactory rating, and eighth graders scored the highest with a 73 percent satisfactory rating. In math, seventh graders scored the lowest with a 60 percent satisfactory rating and fifth graders scored the highest with a 68 percent satisfactory rating.

SISD fourth graders scored 10 percent lower on the STAAR writing exam than the state average with a 59 percent satisfactory rating, and seventh graders scored 15 percent lower than the state average with 55 percent.

In social studies and science, eighth grade scores in SISD were 50 percent and 68 percent satisfactory, respectively. SISD eighth graders scored 15 percent lower in social studies and 8 percent lower in science than the state average. SISD fifth graders also scored 13 percent lower than the state average in science with a 62 percent satisfactory rating.

"While we saw growth in our students' performance this year, we still believe that there is much room for improvement," SISD Chief Academic Officer Lupita Hinojosa said. "Since 2013 our schools' ratings have improved substantially, and while that is cause for celebration, we know we can do more and will continue working toward achieving academic success for every child and every campus."
