In an effort to set Cy-Fair ISD students up for success at the beginning of the 2016-17 school year, staff and volunteers at Cypress Assistance Ministries brought back the nonprofit’s annual back-to-school drive on July 25.

“It’s important that a child be able to start school having everything that they need because otherwise they are set up for a struggle,” CAM’s Director of Development Janet Knott said.

Knott said the organization expects to serve 700 students through the month of August by giving away new backpacks filled with age-appropriate school supplies, new underwear, a new pair of shoes and a voucher for clothing from CAM’s resale shop Angels’ Attic. Tennis shoes in sizes 9 and up are especially in need, CAM officials said.

Regular donation drop-off times at Angels’ Attic are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Readers interested in helping can call 281-955-7684 for more information.

Those in need can walk in Mondays and Wednesdays from 2-4 p.m. or Fridays from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. with a proof of residence.

“There is no in-depth screening process,” Knott said. “If you say you need supplies and you live in this area, we’re happy to help.”

CAM's efforts to help do not stop once school is in session, Knott said. Throughout the year, the faith-based organization helps families and individuals in financial need by providing food and helping to pay monthly bills.

Twenty-five percent of children in the area do not know where their next meal will come from outside of school, Knott said, and CAM relies on donations and volunteers to serve the community year-round.

Sales tax holiday

The annual Texas sales tax holiday is also set for the weekend of Aug. 5-7, giving back-to-school shoppers a chance to purchase items without having to pay the state's 8.25 percent sales tax.

Items such as school backpacks, most school supplies and most clothing and footwear priced under $100 are exempt from sales tax. Certain backpacks defined as luggage, athletic or computer bags are not exempt. A full list can be found on the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts website.

For purchases made under a business account, the retailer must obtain an exemption certificate from the purchaser certifying that the items are purchased for use by an elementary or secondary school student.
